How to reduce your business energy bill

You didn't go into business to wrestle with energy bills.

Finding the right supplier, choosing between fixed and flexible contracts, and keeping up with rising prices can feel like a lot. We know.

If that wasn't enough, global events taking place thousands of miles away are influencing energy costs faced by businesses here in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Nearly three in 10 UK businesses reported struggling with their energy bills in 2025, according to research by Ofgem, the UK energy regulator.

And UK businesses pay more for their industrial energy than any other member of the International Energy Agency (IEA) where data is available, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Energy feels too big to handle, but it's too big to ignore.

The first article in this series of simple, practical top tips articles covers three principles every small-to-medium business owner should know to reduce their monthly business energy costs.

1.

Understand your energy usage before signing an energy contract

It sounds obvious, but finding the right energy deal is critical. No matter what other changes you make, no matter what your usage looks like, without a balanced, fair energy deal that suits your business, you’re up against the tide straight away.

It’s all well and good being told to ‘get a better deal’ but to do that, you need to understand your energy usage.

Before your contract renews, check your term length, unit rates, standing charges and any renewal clauses or deadlines.

Once you understand your current deal and actual energy usage, you can start searching for the right deal.

Remember: When searching for an energy deal, don’t simply look at the headline figures.

For example, going for the deal with the lowest standing charge will likely bump up your unit rate and end up costing your business far more throughout your contract.

2.

Uncover energy waste before cutting usage

We’re not just another company telling you to switch everything off and watch your bills plunge. Because that isn’t how business works.

Your company has machines you simply can’t turn off. Switches you’re not allowed to press. You can’t always just ‘use less’.

That doesn’t mean you can’t find and eliminate waste. We recommend taking steps to identify wasted energy.

Your lighting could be consuming more energy than necessary without anyone noticing, for starters. Non-essential equipment can quietly consume large amounts of gas and electricity throughout the day.

A robust shut-down process can also control any unneeded always-on energy.

You could also consider, sub-metering to measure energy use in specific areas. Understanding what you’re spending on energy in certain processes can help you develop a targeted efficiency plan rather than just flicking switches and hoping the numbers go down.

3.

Consider renewable energy before assuming it can’t help

Renewable energy is no longer just a sustainability decision. It is increasingly becoming a cost-control strategy.

Businesses of all sizes are turning to solar panels and wind turbines to reduce their costs and shield their operations from volatile energy markets over the long term.

We can help you explore whether your business is suited to benefit from increasingly reliable renewable technologies.

Every unit of energy you generate on-site is a unit of energy you don't need to buy from your supplier.

The best part? If you’re able to generate enough electricity to power your whole operation, excess energy can be stored in batteries for future use or sold back to the grid. New revenue stream: unlocked.
