AI Governance: Five Questions Every Board Should Be Able to Answer

Most businesses are now using AI somewhere, whether leadership signed it off or not. Governance is not about slowing that down. It is about knowing what is happening, who is accountable, and where the risks sit. These tips help directors and owners get a grip on AI without needing to be technical.

1.

Find out where AI is already being used

You cannot govern what you cannot see. Staff are likely using tools like ChatGPT or Copilot already, often through free accounts. Start with a simple, honest audit of what is in use and for what. No blame, just visibility. This single step tells you more about your real exposure than any policy document.

2.

Name one person who is accountable

AI governance fails when it belongs to everyone and therefore no one. Assign clear ownership at board or senior level, even if the work is delegated. That person does not need to be technical. They need to ask good questions and make sure answers exist.

3.

Write a short, usable AI policy

A two page policy people actually read beats a thirty page document that sits in a drawer. Cover the basics: which tools are approved, what data must never be put into them, and when a human must check the output. Keep it plain English and review it every few months, because the tools change fast.

4.

Protect your data before you worry about anything else

The most common AI risk for a smaller business is not some distant existential threat. It is staff pasting confidential client data, contracts, or personal information into a public tool. Be specific about what is off limits, and make sure people understand why it matters.

5.

Keep a human in the loop on decisions that matter

AI is a capable assistant, not a decision maker. For anything affecting people, money, or legal obligations, a named person should review and own the final call. This protects your customers, your staff, and you.
