Catering students to host celebratory Coronation lunch

Catering students from three colleges in Warwickshire and Worcestershire will be hosting a celebratory Coronation lunch and inviting those in need from the local community to join them.

Students at Rugby College, Royal Leamington Spa College and Pershore College are hosting events as part of the Coronation Big Lunch.

The events will take place on Wednesday, May 3 in the lead-up to the Bank Holiday weekend and see care home residents, people living at a local retirement village and men who access a male mental health charity visit colleges and have lunch or afternoon tea provided by students.

The colleges are all part of leading group WCG (Warwickshire College Group).

Rugby College will welcome care home residents from near the college to celebrate the King’s coronation, with its on-site ‘Courses Restaurant’ being transformed into a street party with bunting, hats, tablecloths and more.

Level 1 and Level 2 Professional Cookery students have designed a Coronation themed menu for the afternoon, and will be preparing food including sausage and mash, apple crumble and shortbread biscuits.

The college is expecting more than 30 guests at the Rugby College lunch event, with students also carrying out front-of-house duties.

Royal Leamington Spa College will see Supported Learning catering students cook a hearty roast and homemade desert for elderly guests from a retirement village in the town.

Around 10 guests will attend the Coronation Big Lunch party at the college’s bistro, with the bistro also set for a Coronation themed makeover.

And at Pershore College, around 12 members from the Evesham branch of the Men’s Sheds Association will have the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon tea created by Supported Learning students at the college.

The students are designing and preparing a menu for the event, including a showstopping high tea to celebrate the Coronation.

Angela Joyce, CEO of WCG, said: “Our colleges are at the heart of the communities in which they are located. On what will be a special week for the whole country it will be wonderful to welcome people from the community into our colleges for a Coronation celebration.

“Students at each of the three colleges have been involved in the planning and delivery of the lunches and afternoon teas, and are going above and beyond to create a truly memorable experience for guests.

“It will be an opportunity to show off the culinary skills they have developed at the college and gain great experience in how to cater for an event.

“We look forward to welcoming people to our colleges in Leamington, Rugby and Pershore to celebrate with us as part of the Coronation Big Lunch.”
