Warwick AI start-up turns profit in first year after targeted business support

A Warwick-based artificial intelligence start-up that uses the AI agents it creates for clients in its own business has marked its first anniversary by turning a profit – a rare feat for fledgling companies – with the help of targeted business support and investment.

Ascendea, founded by husband and wife Rob and Wilsey Arnold and based at the Warwick Innovation Centre, part of the University of Warwick Science Park, has spent the past year building AI ‘agents’ that automate significant portions of clients’ day-to-day operations.

From research tasks to customer support, reporting, compliance and risk monitoring, its AI agents handle its SME clients’ high-volume, time-intensive tasks that traditionally sit with junior employees.

Ascendea itself operates with nine human team members supported by ten AI agents, each assigned a name and defined role within the organisational structure.

Its human team sets direction, makes judgement calls, manages relationships and retains full accountability, with the AI ‘staff’ doing a lot of the time-consuming work much faster than humans can.

Having moved into the Warwick Innovation Centre as part of the Science Park’s Ignite incubation programme for young businesses, Rob and Wilsey took advice early on from fellow entrepreneurs within the Ignite Alumni Network who have been through similar journeys to Ascendea.

Rob and Wilsey also received one-to-one business guidance from SME Engagement Lead Dirk Schaefer as part of fully-funded business support service Business Ready, delivered by the University of Warwick Science Park on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. Business Ready – High Growth and Innovation Business Support is funded by UK Government through UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and Warwickshire County Council.

Finally, using the Science Park’s connections led to a meeting with the Coventry and Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust (CWRT), a not-for-profit lender supporting regional enterprises, who loaned a six-figure sum to Ascendea.

All this has enabled the firm to reach profitability within its first year of trading, a rare achievement for a technology start-up.

Rob Arnold felt the company’s success lies in practicing what it preaches.

“There’s a lot of noise around AI replacing jobs, but that’s never been our focus,” he said.

“We’ve built Ascendea around responsible human oversight. Every AI agent operates within clear parameters, with audit trails and reporting lines. Our leadership team reviews outputs, manages risk and ensures the technology aligns with our commercial and ethical standards.

“What the agents give us is incredible speed and consistency. They remove friction from the day-to-day running of the business. That creates space for our people to concentrate on strategy, partnerships and growth.

“For our clients, that shift is powerful. They can increase output dramatically without increasing headcount at the same pace. Reaching profitability in year one showed us that this approach really does work – and it’s fair to say we wouldn’t have got there without the support from the Science Park and CWRT.”

Dirk said supporting Ascendea in its formative months had involved much more than simply providing office space.

“The fundamentals really matter in the first year of any start-up” he said.

“Our role through Ignite and Business Ready was to work closely with Rob and Wilsey on commercial planning, investor readiness, financial discipline and growth strategy.

“We challenged assumptions and made sure the business was building on solid foundations, which contributed to a crucial injection of funds from CWRT.”

Alexander Vill, Loans Officer at CWRT, added: “Ascendea is a great example of the innovative businesses emerging across Coventry, Warwickshire and the wider Midlands.

“Rob and Wilsey have built a business with a clear vision for how AI can help SMEs work more efficiently and it’s exciting to see that idea gaining real traction. CWRT were pleased to support the next stage of their growth and look forward to seeing the business continue to develop."

As it enters its second year, Ascendea is hopeful that more SMEs will move beyond experimenting with AI tools and begin to adopt agentic AI more definitively.

Mark Ryder, Executive Director for Communities at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The Business Ready programme provides dedicated support to tech-based small and medium sized businesses. The bespoke advice from the service helped Rob and Wilsey access dedicated guidance from fellow entrepreneurs in those early days.

“They also received one-to-one business support from the service along with being connected to Coventry and Warwickshire Reinvestment Trust who provide loans to regional businesses. The combined support helped Rob and Wilsey to develop and deliver a successful product and begin a very successful journey into the technology market.”

Councillor Chris King, Portfolio Holder for Place at Warwick District Council commented: “From the District Council’s perspective, it is very exciting to see a local business like Ascendea getting a foothold in the expanding world of AI thanks to their participation in the Business Ready Programme.

“We would strongly encourage other companies wanting to explore new markets or opportunities to follow their lead and visit the Business Ready website to find out about the specialist support that is available to them.”

Business Ready – High Growth and Innovation Business Support Programme forms part of Warwickshire County Council’s Business Growth Warwickshire. It is funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and Warwickshire County Council. Responsibility for the planning and delivery of UKSPF was part of the Level 2 Devolution Deal secured by Warwickshire County Council in 2024. Warwickshire’s allocation of UKSPF is supporting a package of communities & place, business support, and people & skills activities in 2025/26.
