Knight school and dragon egg quest - Easter fun for young adventurers at historic location

A Coventry venue dating back to the 13th Century has unveiled an Easter ‘egg-travaganza’ designed to capture the imaginations of young visitors.

St Mary’s Guildhall, located in Coventry’s historic Cathedral quarter, has raised its banners for budding adventurers to embark on a quest for magical eggs and learn how to become knights of the realm – all during the school holidays.

Young explorers have been challenged to take on the Guildhall’s ‘Dragon Egg Quest’ – running at 10am every day of the Easter holidays (April 1-16) – as they search for mythical treasure using clues throughout the historical attraction on Bayley Lane.

Families can also experience the Guildhall’s Knight School on Wednesday, April 5 and 12, with St Mary’s resident knight recruiting brave new members for his court. Aspiring knights will learn traditional sword moves and tactical defence skills needed to fight a dragon.

Specially-curated Tudor living history experience days will also be running each Tuesday (April 4 and April 11) and Thursday (April 6 and April 13) where families can experience historic spring traditions in the newly uncovered Medieval Kitchen – one of the best preserved in the UK and now fully accessible for the first time in just under 100 years.

Abi Moore, Heritage and Venue Manager at St Mary’s Guildhall, said: “We have some truly imaginative and engaging events coming up this Easter, with a chance for young visitors and their families to be immersed in action and adventure with real history at its heart.

“The venue is going from strength to strength in terms of its children’s activities, which are proving to be extremely popular, but we also have a number of ways for grown-ups to enjoy and learn about the venue, with other exciting projects yet to be announced.”

Visitors to St Mary’s Guildhall are not only invited to explore the storied grounds, but also take a digital augmented reality tour of the building, enabling them to experience 700 years of partying, power and propaganda virtually using cutting-edge technology.

To complete the experience, guests can enjoy brunch, lunch or afternoon tea in Tales of Tea – the atmospheric restaurant located in the Undercroft of St Mary’s Guildhall.

The recent major package of restoration and refurbishment at St Mary’s Guildhall has been made possible through the Cultural Capital Investment Fund resourced by Coventry City Council, Arts Council England, and the Government’s Getting Britain Building Fund through Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and with the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.
