Historic midlands venue with ties to gunpowder plot set to host half term spectacular

Coventry and Warwickshire families will have plenty to look forward to at a popular 12th century venue this October half term – with exciting events inspired by real history.

Coombe Abbey Hotel, once the most influential monastery in Warwickshire and now a well-known location for ghost sightings, is celebrating the spookiest time of the year in style with a special Halloween Afternoon Tea during the school holidays.

The former Cistercian monastery, which is operated by No Ordinary Hospitality Management (NOHM), is offering a twist on its award-winning afternoon tea, with visitors able to enjoy a bewitching day of culinary exploration and exciting entertainment with actors performing tales inspired by real Coombe history, plus smoke and lights to add to the spooky atmosphere.

The Halloween Afternoon Tea will feature a wicked selection of sweet and savoury food inspired by tombstones, pumpkins and poisoned apples for guests to indulge in. Bookings are open for two sittings across Sunday, October 29 to Tuesday, October 31 at 12.30pm or 3.30pm, with seats already beginning to fill up.

Coombe Abbey Hotel will also remember the fifth of November, with its hugely popular banquets reimagined as a Gunpowder Gala.

The abbey played a significant role in the famous Gunpowder plot as a host of King James’ daughter Elizabeth Stuart, who the plotters had planned to make Queen of England.

In celebration, the venue will welcome modern-day guests to eat, drink and be merry with a four-course meal complete with mead cocktails and goblets of wine and ale on Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4.

Guests will also be treated to a history-inspired performance featuring the tale of the gunpowder plot, followed by a dazzling firework display over Coombe Abbey’s lake and grounds.

The display will be followed by a post-banquet disco for guests to enjoy an evening filled with music and dancing. Doors open from 7pm with food served from 7.45pm. Medieval fancy dress is encouraged.

Gemma Morgan, Sales Office Manager at NOHM, said: “We are delighted to open bookings for our October and November events at Coombe Abbey Hotel in celebration of Halloween and Bonfire Night after a jam-packed summer.

“This time of year represents a great chance to experiment with exciting new menus and revisit some much-loved classics, all while delivering some fantastic entertainment for the whole family as they uncover our fascinating history and enjoy our famed banquets and afternoon tea.”
