Holmes Workholding strengthens North American Presence with Exporting Starts Here

Holmes UK Ltd, trading as Holmes Workholding, is a Birmingham based precision engineering manufacturer established in the early 1980s and under its current ownership since 1992.

The company specialises in the design and manufacture of bespoke workholding equipment, including special collets, automation components and high precision engineered parts supplied to sectors such as machine tools, aerospace, oil and gas, packaging and general engineering. Operating a low volume, high precision manufacturing model, the business has developed a strong reputation for technical capability and reliability.

Holmes Workholding strengthens North American Presence with Exporting Starts Here

With exports accounting for 50–60% of sales, North America represents a key market, with Canada as the primary destination and frequent re-export into the United States and Mexico. While these established trading relationships provided a solid foundation, the Holmes team recognised that further growth across North America and entry into new markets required a more structured and proactive export strategy. To achieve this, Holmes Workholding engaged with the Business Growth West Midlands (BGWM) Export Support Programme, delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire, Black Country and Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, seeking guidance to strengthen their presence in Canada, explore new sector opportunities, and identify trusted commercial partners to expand their reach across the United States and Mexico.

Through tailored one-to-one support, the programme connected Holmes Workholding with a Canadian sales agent operating within the agricultural sector. This introduction opened access to a new market segment and provided a clear pathway to diversify the company’s North American customer base. Early discussions progressed positively, with the company keen to meet the agent in person to build trust and formalise the commercial relationship. Adviser support extended to financial and operational guidance, helping Holmes Workholding secure an export grant to fund a seven-day market visit to Canada. This enabled the company to progress strategic export development activity without placing additional pressure on working capital.

The visit delivered strong commercial outcomes. Meetings with existing customers in the Greater Toronto area were highly productive, resulting in commitments to increase order volumes and progress new projects. A return visit by Canadian partners to the UK is now scheduled for April 2026 to advance two confirmed project discussions. Engagement with Nelson Motors in Saskatchewan identified a new opportunity to supply aftermarket components for John Deere industrial machinery, supporting entry into the agricultural sector. The programme also facilitated introductions to a potential sales agent in Germany, helping Holmes Workholding explore medium- to long-term market expansion in Europe. Strategic discussions covered sales, marketing, pricing models, logistics, and market-entry approaches, giving the company confidence to make informed decisions about international growth.

Reflecting on the support, Tim Holmes, Director of Holmes UK Ltd, said: “The Exporting Starts Here Programme has provided valuable support in helping us strengthen our presence in North America. The connection and market visit enabled us to meet key customers face-to-face, which directly led to new opportunities and strengthened relationships. The visit has already resulted in planned follow-up meetings and potential new projects, including expansion into the agricultural sector. Without this support, it would have been more challenging to progress these opportunities at pace. The programme has played an important role in supporting our export growth strategy and future international development.”

David Zell, Assistant Delivery Manager for Business Programmes at the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), added: “The Export Support Programme, run by Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of BGWM and West Midlands Combined Authority, is a fantastic programme offering free, in-depth, subject-specific expertise support to businesses within the West Midlands. It enables them to grow their potential through international exporting channels. The team are incredibly supportive, knowledgeable and driven to ensure businesses thrive. The programme is 100% committed to achieving success – and is one not to be missed.”

As a result of the programme, Holmes Workholding has engaged in new markets, increased export orders and volumes, strengthened international relationships, and explored sector diversification. With clearer strategic direction and practical support, the company is now well positioned to continue its international expansion and unlock further export growth across North America and Europe.
