Chef teaches school children how to bake for retirement community's Christmas tea party

Children from St Nicholas Primary School in Alcester, were invited to Great Alne Park, earlier this week, to bake for residents as part of the school’s ‘Thrive’ initiative, a national programme which aims to improve children’s resilience and confidence. Head Chef, Tom Blundell, of the later living village’s new restaurant, invited five children to bake festive treats in his professional kitchen to share with residents, for a very special intergenerational Christmas tea party. Joining Tom and the children (aged five and six) in the kitchen was Great Alne Park resident, and keen baker, Mrs Anne Goody. Together they learned to make and decorate shortbread biscuits, which were then presented to residents in the Great Alne Park restaurant, for a truly inspirational and Christmassy occasion.

Great Alne Park, situated just a few miles from Alcester, is home to 166 attractive retirement cottages and apartments, set within 78 acres of stunning park land. Its impressive Clubhouse opened in the summer, whilst its new restaurant was unveiled for residents and the community in October, with Head Chef, Tom Blundell, at the helm.

Head of School, Karen O’Shea, comments: “The staff and residents of Great Alne Park couldn’t have been more welcoming and the children enjoyed every minute. This sort of intergenerational engagement is priceless and contributes greatly to wellbeing and positive experiences.

“Giving the opportunity for the children to learn to bake in a working commercial kitchen with the Head Chef himself, has been an experience they will never forget. Seeing the pride in their faces when they offered their ‘bakes’ to the residents was an absolute delight.”

Acting Village Manager, Tina Digby, comments: “Our residents have led extremely interesting lives and have a diverse set of skills at their fingertips. It was a pleasure to invite the wider community into our village and share this wisdom and experience.  We have an open-door policy, which demonstrates our enthusiasm to foster a real sense of unity and it was wonderful this Christmas to bring the generations together for an event that was fun, educational and a step in the right direction to tackle the loneliness epidemic, so prevalent in our older generation, particularly around Christmas time.”

Great Alne Park is home to a range of impressive facilities, which include; a swimming pool and wellness centre, as well as a superb range of country club style facilities that provide plenty of opportunities for maintaining an active lifestyle, socialising and relaxing. The site also boasts an impressive games room, library and even a lavish, art-deco themed, in-house cinema.

Positioned to the north of the picturesque Cotswolds, Great Alne Park occupies an enviable position in the Warwickshire countryside, within easy reach of Warwick, Leamington Spa and Henley-in-Arden, providing a collection of attractive retirement cottages and apartments starting from start from £295,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and from £514,000 for a three bedroom cottage.
