WCG’s apprentices impressed judges with their ability to produce complex fabricated sheet metal components using a mix of traditional and modern methods, all while working from detailed technical drawings and under timed conditions.
Apprentice Jay Yeoman, from Solihull, won the Guards Helmet Trophy for the best Open Class Make entry.
Apprentice Rob Hudson, also from Solihull, won the new Adrian Nicklin Memorial Trophy for the best Open Class written entry. Rob also won the ISME Trophy for the highest total of marks for the Tool Caddy and Open Class entries.
Competing against top talent nationwide, the five apprentices distinguished themselves in tasks requiring layout development, folding, bending, joining, and careful attention to accuracy, safety, and overall finish. Their success is a reflection of the high-quality training and industry preparation provided through WCG’s apprenticeship training programmes.
The ISME Skills Competition is a national event run by the Institute of Sheet Metal Engineering, aimed at promoting excellence in metalwork and fabrication. It helps young learners gain recognition from industry leaders, enhance their employability, and apply their classroom learning in a practical setting. The event’s historic location at the Black Country Living Museum provides an inspiring backdrop that mirrors the legacy and innovation of the UK’s metalwork industry.
Garry Couchman, Trainer in Welding and Fabrication at WCG, praised the apprentices' performance:
"Our apprentices did an incredible job under real pressure, and I couldn’t be prouder of what they achieved. They applied everything they’ve learned in training with professionalism, attention to detail, and real enthusiasm. These awards reflect their dedication and the growing strength of WCG’s apprenticeship programmes in supporting the next generation of engineering talent."
“On behalf of the team, I’d also like to thank Jamie-Leigh at Whale Tankers for his company's support for the competition.”
Winning an award at this level offers more than recognition - it boosts career confidence, enhances CVs, and provides a valuable platform for networking with employers and industry professionals.
