With ambitions to expand into international markets but with no prior experience in exporting, Torken Ltd approached the Business Growth West Midlands (BGWM) Export Support Programme, part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The programme (funded by BGWM) delivered by the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, provides expert guidance to businesses in the region, helping them navigate international markets.
Before joining the programme, the business had no clear understanding of where to begin with exporting and were unsure which international markets to prioritise. They lacked knowledge of tariffs; trade agreements and they also recognised that their digital presence was not yet geared towards overseas customers. The BGWM Export Support Programme provided one-to-one guidance that gave the company the clarity and tools they needed.
Their dedicated advisor, Avalon Maison, helped identify Germany, France, and the Netherlands as high-potential markets, explained how their product should be classified under the Harmonised System, and demonstrated how to monitor duties, tariffs, and trade agreements. Guidance was also given on securing intellectual property rights within the EU and on funding opportunities to strengthen their digital presence and attend trade shows. Finally, the adviser recommended a staged route-to-market approach, starting with international marketplaces to generate early sales and moving towards partnerships with distributors as the business grows.
As a result, Torken Ltd now has an international strategy and a stronger grasp of the export process. They understand how to monitor tariffs and trade requirements, have identified the most suitable markets for entry, and are taking steps to protect their brand overseas. The company is preparing to enhance its website for international customers and exploring funding for trade shows. Most importantly, they have moved from uncertainty to confidence, with a plan in place to grow in the UK and overseas
Reflecting on the experience, Karen Cross, Director of Torken Ltd, said:
“The BGWM Export Support Programme has helped in so many ways: Avalon has highlighted otherwise unrecognised markets abroad, pointed us in the right direction for identifying the correct classification for my product, given us advice for securing funding, and kept us focused along the way. The programme has been pivotal in guiding us through the minefield of exporting goods and continues to do so at a pace that suits us.”
David Zell, West Midlands Combined Authority’s (WMCA) Assistant Delivery Manager – Business Programmes, added: “The BGWM Export Support Programme is a fantastic programme offering free, in-depth, subject-specific expertise support to businesses within the West Midlands, enabling them to grow their potential through international exporting channels”
