The move addresses a quirk in the chart reporting system which meant that physical releases sold via Bandcamp were not counted towards the UK charts unless customers also downloaded the digital version of the album.
In practice, many fans purchasing vinyl, CDs or cassettes did not download the digital copy because they already owned the music in physical form, leaving a gap between fan support and chart eligibility.
By enabling those physical Bandcamp sales to be reported to the OCC, The Pack Smart Group’s fulfilment clients can now ensure that purchases made directly by fans contribute to official chart positions.
The change is expected to be particularly significant for independent artists operating in specialist genres where chart positions are often determined by relatively small margins, such as the Official Rock & Metal Albums Chart or the Jazz & Blues Albums Chart.
Seánna Holland, Business Development Director at The Pack Smart Group said the development removes a long-standing frustration for artists who rely heavily on direct-to-fan platforms.
“For years, artists selling physical formats through Bandcamp have known that a large proportion of those sales were effectively invisible when it came to the UK charts,” she said.
“That disconnect has been frustrating for artists and their teams, because the fans were there and the purchases were real, but they weren’t always reflected in the charts.
“Being able to report those sales feels like a really positive step for the independent sector and it ensures that when fans support an artist directly, it genuinely counts.”
The Pack Smart Group works with artists, labels and management teams to store, pick, pack and distribute merchandise and physical music releases worldwide.
Its CEO Nick Walker felt the development reflects the growing importance of direct-to-fan commerce within the modern music industry.
“Platforms like Bandcamp have become absolutely central to how many independent artists connect with their audiences and sell music,” he said.
“Fans increasingly want to support artists directly, and many choose to do this by buying vinyl records and other physical formats.
“This change means artists who are building their careers through direct relationships with their fans can finally see that support properly represented in the charts. For us, it’s about making sure the infrastructure behind those sales works in the artist’s favour.
“We’re pleased that we can now offer artists selling through Bandcamp the reassurance that their physical sales can count towards the charts in the way they should.”
