St Mary's Guildhall to bring live music and tapas nights to hidden city centre space

A new after-hours experience is set to bring live music and Mediterranean cuisine to one of Coventry’s most historic settings.

Following the success of its acclaimed daytime offering and summer dining series, Tales of Tea, St Mary’s Guildhall is unveiling Tales After Dark – a new monthly event transforming the medieval undercroft into a relaxed evening destination.

Operated by No Ordinary Hospitality (NOHM), the team behind Coombe Abbey Hotel’s renowned afternoon teas, Tales of Tea has quickly established itself as a stand-out addition to Coventry’s Cathedral Quarter.

Visitors are now invited to experience the venue in an entirely new light when Tales After Dark takes place on the last Friday of each month from 5pm when live music will be blended with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and a carefully curated drinks selection within the atmospheric surroundings of the 14th century undercroft.

Guests can expect an evolving programme of live performances, launching with Coventry-based saxophonist Matthew Middleton on Friday, April 24, to feature a mix of jazz and contemporary sets throughout the summer.

The setting – illuminated by soft lighting and framed by historic stone arches – provides a unique backdrop for unwinding at the end of the week or beginning a night out in the city.

A menu of tapas-style dishes has been created to complement the experience, featuring flavours inspired by the Mediterranean.

Options include Spanish charcuterie & caperberries, patatas bravas, pork and beef meatballs and saganaki alongside lighter bites such as marinated Gordal olives and Tempura Cantabrian anchovies.

To mark the launch on April 24, the first 10 guests at the opening night will receive a complimentary glass of house sangria.

Abi Moore, Heritage and Venue Manager at No Ordinary Hospitality, said Tales After Dark is designed to be accessible and spontaneous with no pre-booking required.

“Tales of Tea has already proved to be a wonderful addition to Coventry’s hospitality scene, combining exceptional food within an extraordinary heritage setting,” she said.

“With Tales After Dark, we wanted to create something that offers a completely different experience which is more relaxed, more atmospheric and perfect for whether you’re looking to unwind after a long week at work or wanting the perfect prelude to a night out in Coventry.

“It’s about great music and allowing people to enjoy this incredible space in a new way with each dish being designed for sharing to encourage a sociable and informal dining style.

“Visitors can simply arrive, take a seat and enjoy the ambience since Tales After Dark will provide an unforgettable blend of heritage, hospitality and live entertainment.”

The new concept builds on a successful summer programme which saw the undercroft host a series of Saturday evening fine dining experiences alongside its popular daytime offer.

Tales of Tea will continue to serve its renowned afternoon teas, brunch and lunch menus within the undercroft which was once used for everything from food storage to housing gunpowder during the English Civil War.
