This redevelopment will enhance the quality of care for the cats but will also play a part in combating the rise in cat abandonment seen across the region since 2019. The 11% increase marks one of the highest levels of abandonment the charity has seen, this is alongside an increase via national RSPCA inspectors too, and is driven by factors such as the rising cost of living, mandatory microchipping, increased vet fees, a lack of neutering, and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The cattery redevelopment has been designed to significantly improve the welfare and living conditions for cats in the branch’s care. With modern, purpose-built facilities, the branch will be better equipped to provide high standards of care, ensuring that every cat receives the comfort, safety, and attention they deserve.
By improving the cattery, the RSPCA Coventry and District can ensure the highest care for cats and are seeking additional funding to create regional ‘cat cams’ for those unable to adopt to still experience the benefits of having a pet. If successful for this additional funding, it will also enable prospective adopters to get to know the personality of the cats they would like to adopt.
As part of this exciting redevelopment, the RSPCA Coventry and District Branch is asking for anyone who can foster a cat on a temporary basis to contact the centre. From February 2025, fosterers will be needed to provide loving, temporary homes for cats while the cattery is redeveloped. Full support including vet appointments, pet food and supplies will be provided to anyone who wishes to foster.
Glenn Fleet, Chair of the RSPCA Coventry and District Branch said:
“We are thrilled to announce the successful funding to redevelop our cattery, which will make a real difference to the lives of cats in our care. The rising number of abandoned cats in Coventry is deeply concerning, but this project allows us to take positive steps to address the issue. We now need the support of the community to help us provide foster homes for cats, ensuring they receive the care and love they deserve as they wait for their forever families.”
The RSPCA Coventry and District Branch is appealing for anyone who can foster a cat to contact the centre as well as any business who could support the installation and creation of ‘cat cams’ to get in touch. Please email [email protected] for more information.
