With a machining envelope of diameter 520mm x height 350mm and a loading capacity of 150kg, the MX-520 allows Pailton Engineering to automate production of its yoke range. The machine requires minimal human input even when producing intricate steering system components, such as steering columns, intermediate shafts and steering universal joints. 

“The Matsuura MX-520 is renowned for its precision, speed, flexibility and reliability, making it ideal for complex machining tasks critical to the Pailton Engineering range of steering systems,” said Operations Manager, Steve Nollett. “By continuing to install advanced technology like this in our manufacturing facility, we’ll further improve the quality, consistency and availability of top-quality steering components."

In addition, the system has space for 60 tools to allow for sister tooling. Combined with four pallets, this enables a continuous production flow minimising downtime and allowing parts to run simultaneously. 

“The new machine will make our time on the shop floor much easier,” continued Nollett. “The 5-axes and multi-pallet system of the MX-520 enables machining of complex geometries previously impossible without manual manipulation of the part. Now, instead of needing a person present every 45 minutes to manipulate or remove parts, we’ve got prolonged unmanned operation.”
