Speaking at the event, Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive of NWSLC, described the evening as one of the most important in the college calendar. She said: “This evening is a powerful celebration of the extraordinary achievements of our students and the profound impact our college community has on lives across our region. It’s a moment to shine a light on the talent, determination and ambition that define who we are.
“Every individual recognised tonight began their journey with their own hopes for the future. Their accomplishments reach far beyond exam results – they embody the technical expertise, resilience and personal growth that will shape their futures and strengthen our communities. Last year was a fantastic year for the College and I am already looking forward to celebrating this year’s achievements as the college continues to grow and develop with our new Grayson Place campus opening in Nuneaton, home to our restaurant, catering, adult and Higher Education programmes.
“I am immensely proud of our staff, whose unwavering commitment and professionalism have driven outstanding student satisfaction and earned national recognition for pioneering work that removes barriers to employment for young people. Their dedication transforms opportunities and changes lives.”
The evening brought together students, apprentices, staff, families and community representatives, including the Deputy Lord Leftenant and High Sherrif of Leicestershire, to recognise outstanding academic success, celebrate the winners of the College’s STAR Awards and honour NWSLC students who achieved national recognition as WorldSkills UK medallists. NWSLC’s mission is to create success through learning, and the evening truly recognised the impact of this work with many former students returning to celebrate with us who have moved on to jobs and careers beyond us. The evening concluded with an uplifting student performance that raised the roof of the Athena!
Among those recognised on the evening was Alfie Cook, winner of both the Principal’s Prize and Apprentice of the Year. Alfie’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and determination. Overcoming significant challenges, he demonstrated exceptional commitment throughout his studies and has since progressed to a successful career as a self-employed tradesman.
Alfie said: “When I started my journey at NWSLC, I never imagined I would be standing here today. The support I received helped me build confidence in myself, push through challenges and believe in what I could achieve. I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come and grateful to everyone who supported me along the way.”
During the evening, the college’s higher education students graduated and were recognised for their commitment to balancing study with work, family responsibilities and professional development.
Victoria Boucher, Higher Education Star Award winner, said: “I was thrilled to win! I loved my Performing Arts course – the college was so welcoming and inclusive that I really thrived. I’m now excited to be completing my degree at De Montfort University.”
