The winning students are studying Level 2, 3 and 4 programmes across a range of art, design, graphics, fashion and interior design courses. They were successful in nine of the festival’s categories, including computer aided design, fashion and fantasy art.
Nuneaton Festival of Arts, which dates back to 1949, is an annual celebration of the performing, visual and creative arts and is a prominent date in the town’s diary.
The college’s award-winning students attended a special celebration evening at the Salvation Army Citadel in Dugdale Street on Saturday, March 21, where they were presented with their awards by adjudicator and local artist Andrew Sutton and Nuneaton MP Jodie Gosling.
The students’ winning pieces are now on display at Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery in Riversley Park until April 18th, during its opening hours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Marion Plant, OBE FCGI, Principal and Chief Executive at NWSLC, said: “The festival is a long-standing event for the arts in Nuneaton and one that we are proud to be part of. It gives students a vitally important real-world opportunity to have work exhibited, which is a key objective of their courses.
“Once again, the talent of our students has shone through, reflected in the number of awards they received. We congratulate each and every one of them.”
Neal Evans, NWSLC’s course leader for foundation diplomas in art, design and media practice, said: “It was wonderful to see a range of disciplines submitted, from fine art right through to graphic design. Each student worked hard and showed determination and creativity in their approach to their project.
“An important part of being a working artist is exhibiting so this was a brilliant opportunity to meet that requirement and for students to consider aspects such as framing, how their piece will be viewed and who will look at it. These are all the aspects you have to consider if you work as an artist.
“The competition adjudicator has no affiliation with the college so for the students, this is independent recognition of their talents. In these subjects, it is not always easy to publicly showcase your work and put your talent out there, so gaining this validation helps to build their confidence, which is something they can take with them as they move forward in their careers.”
