Florence Bullwright and Sanjana Neogi joined the business for the internship and WMG assigned an industry expert to help facilitate the knowledge transfer into the business and bridge that gap between academia and industry.
Deeley Group has appointed Florence as its new ESG Coordinator following the programme’s success.
Deeksha Sampath, Technology Transfer Engineer from WMG, supported the interns in helping to establish Deeley Group’s first comprehensive Scope 3 emissions assessment.
Florence and Sanjana measured Scope 3 emissions across seven relevant categories, including areas such as purchased goods and services, and used a mix of spend-based and activity-based measurements across the categories.
They presented a three, five and 10-year roadmap for the business that will make operationally net zero carbon for Scope 1 and 2 attainable by the 2036 target. This includes a range of potential measures, including switching to renewable electricity for temporary building supplies through power purchase agreements, which could save the equivalent of 80.1 tonnes CO2-eq annually.
The business will also explore the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for generators and plant equipment. This could reduce co2 emissions from these sources by up to 90 per cent.
Deeley Group will also be investigating temporary EV charging solutions for its construction sites and the use of bio-LPG instead of propane.
The business is working towards 99 per cent of all electricity being used on its sites to be from renewable sources and is set to invest in a new system to accurately track Scope 3 emissions.
Eleanor Deeley, Joint Managing Director at Deeley Group, said: “This is a major step forward in our ambitious plans to be operational net zero by 2036 and the work Florence and Sanjana have done sets the foundations for our future plans.
“Scope 3 emissions continue to be a challenge that many in the sector haven’t been able to tackle. We need to look at all three scopes to achieve our goals and this work supported through the WMG Internship Programme and has given some clear actions to carry forward.”
Deeksha Sampath, Technology Transfer Engineer at WMG, said: “It’s been a privilege to supervise Florence and Sanjana on this project supporting Deeley in establishing their first round of Scope 3 emissions reporting. Their dedication and fresh perspectives as interns have been instrumental in shaping the project’s success.
“As we navigate the complexities of supply chain emissions, this exercise has offered valuable insights into how construction companies can achieve meaningful decarbonisation. It’s encouraging to see companies like Deeley taking a proactive role in driving sustainability across the industry, not just responding to legislation but leading by example.”
