National Institute of Teaching and Education awarded highest possible rating from inspectors for the quality of its teacher training provision

The National Institute of Teaching and Education (NITE) has been praised for the quality of its initial teacher training around the world.

NITE, which is part of Coventry University Group, was recently inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (on behalf of Ofsted) in relation to its International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) programme, achieving Grade 1 status, the highest rating possible.

The inspectorate concluded that at NITE “the quality of leadership and management and the quality of programme design and delivery meets all requirements and exceeds in most areas”.

NITE was launched by Coventry University Group in 2019 to open up careers in teaching to more people through its innovative training model that allows students to train to teach in schools anywhere in England. After gaining the licence to award the iQTS status in 2022 it expanded to enable teachers to train from anywhere in the world.

The report highlights NITE’s flexible delivery as a key strength, which enhances accessibility to teacher training in different contexts and locations. In the 2024/25 academic year NITE provided teacher training to learners across 24 countries including Ireland, Spain, Thailand and Vietnam.

Inspectors were also impressed by how NITE’s high-quality training is underpinned by relevant learning theories and cognitive science.

They also drew attention to the high levels of academic and pastoral support provided and the rigorous quality assurance processes in place to ensure school partners understand their roles and responsibilities and support trainees well to progress and achieve.

Within its assessment of NITE’s leadership, the report complimented the information and advice made available to iQTS learners, the process to assess candidate suitability to train, the mentorship available to students and the strong culture of continuous improvement that exists within the organisation.

The teaching programme itself was praised for the quality of its online resources, its evidence-based curriculum, the tailored programmes based on location and how trainees are well prepared to enter education at primary, middle and secondary phases.

Professor Geraint Jones, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor and CEO at NITE, said: “This recognition of the high-quality teacher training provided by NITE to trainee teachers across the globe is incredibly important to us. I am so very proud of the whole team at NITE, who, along with our wonderful school partners, deserve all the credit for achieving this outstanding result.

“Our student numbers from around the world continue to grow rapidly, which is also testament to the quality of our programmes and expertise of our staff. We are also excited to have recently launched a suite of innovative undergraduate teacher training courses, alongside our postgraduate routes, which are also proving to be very popular.”
