Shaun first joined Chadwick Accountants in Bidford-on-Avon for two weeks of work experience whilst at school. It was immediately clear however that he had a natural aptitude for accountancy, and a genuine passion for the profession.
AAT - the Association of Accounting Technicians - is the global professional body for accounting technicians and bookkeepers, as well as a major provider of finance and accounting qualifications in the UK.
Part of its mission statement is that it believes everyone should have the opportunity to unleash their career ambition, and by breaking down barriers, empower more people with the real-world expertise valued by organisations in all sectors.
“That’s certainly the case with Shaun,” says Chadwick’s managing director Rachael Chadwick-Harrison.
“Shaun has been diagnosed with autism, and while his school encouraged him to take A-levels, he was determined to follow his own path and pursue an apprenticeship. At just 16, he joined us full-time, and his progress since has been extraordinary: he has already completed AAT Levels 2 and 3, and is now studying Level 4.
“Shaun’s autism is not a barrier, but a strength,” continues Rachael.
“His focus, logical thinking and eye for detail make him an excellent accountant, while his determination has allowed him to overcome personal challenges. When he first arrived, he was shy and reluctant to even answer the phone. Today, he confidently leads client meetings, explaining financial systems with assurance and clarity. His journey is a remarkable story of resilience and growth.”
What makes Shaun truly deserving of the award, concludes Rachael, is his impact on others. “He takes time to support older colleagues with technology and exam preparation, breaking down concepts into clear explanations. He is also an ambassador for the profession, encouraging friends to consider apprenticeships and sharing his positive experiences.
“Shaun is more than a talented young accountant - he is an inspiration for other neurodiverse young people. He shows that with passion, hard work and the right support, you can not only succeed but thrive.”
