International Trade
ATA Carnet
If you’re exhibiting at an overseas trade fair, taking professional or sporting equipment abroad, or travelling with commercial samples, you may need an ATA Carnet – an international customs document that allows you to temporarily export goods without paying duties or taxes.
An ATA Carnet simplifies the process of moving goods across borders by serving as a “passport for goods,” covering multiple countries and trips for up to 12 months. It saves you time, money and paperwork by removing the need for separate customs declarations in each country.
At the Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, we work in partnership with the Bristol Chamber of Commerce to support businesses with their ATA Carnet requirements.

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows goods to be temporarily exported and imported between countries that are part of the ATA Carnet system. It can be used for items such as trade show and exhibition materials, professional equipment, or commercial samples, provided they are non-consumable. An ATA Carnet enables these goods to leave and re-enter the UK within a 12-month period (subject to country-specific time restrictions) and helps businesses avoid paying unnecessary taxes or duties.
Cost for members of the Chamber is £291.50 +VAT + insurance costs/guarantee premiums, which the ECert system/Bristol Chamber will advise.
Cost for non-members is £500 +VAT plus any other insurance costs, etc.
When applying for an ATA Carnet, you’ll need to provide some key information about your business and the goods you’re taking abroad.
First, you’ll need to include:
- Your company’s full name
- Your company’s full address
You’ll also need to give details about:
- The countries or territories you’ll be visiting with your goods
- How long you intend to keep your goods or equipment overseas
- The type of goods or equipment you’re taking (for example, sports gear or musical instruments)
Finally, you’ll need to prepare a detailed general list that clearly describes every item you’re taking. This list must be as accurate and thorough as possible so Customs can easily identify each item.
For guidance on creating a general list, you can refer to Bristol's ATA Carnet general list guide. Click here: https://www.businesswest.co.uk/export/ata-carnet/general-lists
